The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the importance of creating a collaborative ecosystem where parents, teachers, and the school administration work together to foster holistic development in children. It is imperative to build trust with parents and involve them in the education process, so schools can achieve the goals set by NEP and ensures a stronger learning environment for students. Here are some strategies to enhance parent engagement aligned with the NEP framework:

Regular Communication Channels

NEP encourages schools to maintain open and regular communication with parents. Weekly updates, newsletters, and digital platforms can be utilized to inform parents about their child’s progress, curriculum changes, and upcoming events. Organizing periodic parent-educator meetings (PEM), where there is a comprehensive discussion about the holistic development of the child and not a feedback from the school alone.

 Parental Participation in Learning

In line with NEP’s focus on experiential and project-based learning, schools can involve parents in activities such as reading sessions, storytelling, or co-curricular workshops. This not only helps parents understand the school’s teaching approach but also strengthens their bond with their children’s education.

Workshops on NEP Objectives

Conducting orientation sessions and workshops on NEP’s key goals—such as foundational literacy and numeracy, skill-based education, and inclusive learning—can empower parents with knowledge. Helping them understand their role in supporting these goals ensures active participation in their children’s academic journey. The parents should be encouraged to learn more about the educational processes.

Community Building through Parent Networks

Parent committees or groups need to be created so that they contribute to school activities, such as cultural programs or eco-clubs. This aligns with NEP’s emphasis on community engagement. These networks encourage parents to interact, share ideas, and actively contribute to school initiatives, fostering a sense of belonging.

Supporting Holistic Development

NEP promotes the integration of physical, emotional, and cognitive growth. Schools can engage parents in supporting their children’s mental health and extracurricular interests by organizing sessions on emotional well-being, time management, or nutrition. Celebrating students’ non-academic achievements with parents strengthens trust and mutual respect. It also broadens the understanding of all stakeholders to go beyond classroom and academic boundaries.

Feedback Mechanisms

Implementing structured feedback systems gives parents a platform to share their perspectives. Regularly incorporating their suggestions into school policies and practices builds transparency and trust.

By aligning parent engagement strategies with the NEP framework, schools can create an inclusive and collaborative environment that prioritizes the holistic development of students. Strong parent-school partnerships not only build trust but also lay the foundation for a nurturing and supportive educational ecosystem. School time for any student is the most impressionable and lays the foundation for their future so focused collaboration of school and parents will ensure a healthier future for children.
